Dewa Sanzan 3-Day Trekking Tour: Mount Gassan, Mount Yudono, and Mount Haguro
This 4-day tour takes you across all three sacred peaks. It is designed as a trekking tour, meaning you don’t need heavy-duty mountaineering boots to join. The maximum walking time is around 6 hours per day. Rest assured, a certified guide from the Japan Mountain Guides Association will ensure your safety every step of the way as you explore the wonders of Dewa Sanzan.
Itinerary
On your first day, simply take the Shinkansen or fly into Yamagata Station or Yamagata Airport on your own. From there, our private vehicle will be waiting to pick you up.
After checking into a lovely mountain resort, we will hold a briefing to prepare for the days ahead, followed by a delicious dinner to fuel up for tomorrow’s adventure.
Today, we ascend Mount Gassan, the main peak of the Dewa Sanzan. A chairlift will whisk us up to the 1,500-meter mark, where we begin our 3-hour hike to the 1,984-meter summit. You can experience the striking remnants of snow fields through July, or enjoy the vibrant autumn foliage if you visit in September.
After descending, we will purify and refresh our bodies in a wonderful natural hot spring (onsen) before heading out to a fantastic local restaurant for dinner.
In the morning, we head to Mount Yudono Shrine, the most sacred and hidden sanctuary of the Dewa Sanzan. Passing through multiple torii gates, you will discover a mystical shrine integrated into nature, where a giant, hot-spring-carved rock is enshrined as a deity. Visiting this holy site is said to grant a spiritual rebirth and a fresh start in life.
In the afternoon, we tackle the famous 2,000 stone steps of Mount Haguro to visit the Dewa Sanzan Shrine, the main site of worship for all three peaks. As you climb through a majestic grove of ancient cedar trees, a 1,000-year-old five-story pagoda and the massive thatched-roof shrine will appear before you, letting you truly feel the living spirit of ancient Japanese mountain worship.
On your final day, enjoy a wonderful breakfast at the resort before checking out. We will then head toward the Shinkansen station. Along the way, we will stop by a local souvenir center so you can pick up unique keepsakes to remember your journey. Afterward, we will drop you off at the station to catch your bullet train back to Tokyo, bringing your unforgettable adventure to a close.
